Blonde Inspiration: Brigitte Bardot

She's French, she rocked the winged eyeliner and a nude pouty lip, and she had the best hair.

Whether it was pigtails, messy half-up half-down...

... Teased to the max...

... Pulled back with a wide headband, or long wispy bangs....

... Brigitte had it going on.

And I love the (rare) smile. It's the best accessory to great hair. ;)

Curly Hair Inspiration: Julia Roberts

Today I'm celebrating the beautiful hair of my personal favorite curly girl: Julia Roberts. Her locks in "Pretty Woman" are just perfect, and one of the reasons I embrace and love my own curls.

Let's bring it, curly girls... the bigger (and messier) the better!

"My real hair color is kind of a dark blonde. Now I just have mood hair."

"I believe that the way you feel about your life will eventually show up on your face."

"It's not just great teachers that shape your life. Sometimes its the absence of great teachers...
Being ignored can be just as good for a person as being lauded."

"The older you get, the more fragile you understand life to be.
I think that's good motivation for getting out of bed joyfully each day."

Updos, Education, and lovin' the DEVA

Lots going on here in FlyGirl land... I've been on the floor on Saturdays for a month now, taking clients, and will be adding Tuesdays from 12-5 starting next week. If you'd like to make an appointment, drop me a message!

One of my favorite things I've been able to do in the salon are wedding updos! From styling flower girls, bridesmaids, and a wedding guest who wanted a simple, last-minute fishtail braid (see above), it's been a delight to see people's faces light up when they see the finished style, and be able to make their dreams come true.

And speaking of updos, I had my hair teased up 60s style for two straight weekends, playing Mrs. Darling in Franklin Performing Arts Company's production of Peter Pan (I also played Smee). Here's a picture. Everyone always asks, so yes, I did my own hair. ;)

I also just attended the Next Level hair show in Providence this weekend. There was lots of inspiration (see Pureology and Keratin Complex above), I learned some fabulous new razoring techniques for my Paul Mitchell carving comb, and an awesome ombré technique as well. (If anyone wants to be a model and let me try it out, I'll do it for no charge!)

Here's me and one of my favorite cosmo classmates. So happy we could meet up and that we've kept in touch. You bond in special (and terrifying) ways when you spend 30 hrs a week with people and sharp tools.

And I got a side hug from Martino! His Keratin Complex demos were educational and wildly entertaining. This time around I was too scared to jump up on stage and do the Cupid Shuffle with him, but there's always next year! ;)

Lastly, I didn't realize how much the DevaCurl way of living and caring for my hair had affected me, until I stopped using the products. Oops. Fortunately, I hit a Cosmoprof on the way back from the show and did a big stock up on my favorite things. Feel free to either come into the salon for a DevaCut, or message me to order products. I can get them to you!

Calling all curls!

So here's a quick update, because things have been crazily busy and I haven't gotten around to posting...

In mid August (after a long night of food poisoning) I took the first step on my dream to becoming a curly hair specialist, completing the one day DevaCurl course for a "Deva Inspired Stylist" certificate, and received hands-on training in the acclaimed Deva Cut as well as education on all Deva products. I can not tell you how great a class it was, from the instructors to the techniques I learned. Robert Nieves was a riot, with his fabulous laugh and fresh attitude. "Let me see, baby. Oh, it's perfect!" (Anyone who calls me "baby," with a Puerto Rican accent will be in my heart forever. ;) And Maxine Green was encouraging and so excited that I was new to the industry. She gave me a slew of products to take home for myself.

Since the class, I've been practicing the cut (love it!), using the products on my own hair (adore them!), and trying to spread the word about the life-changing power of Deva. I'm currently on the lookout for curly girls who would like to try the Deva cut at wildly discounted prices, giving me the opportunity to practice and educate. Once I get this one fully under my belt, it will be on the pricey side, so come and give it a shot while I'm still a junior stylist. ;)

It's been a tremendous few months since finishing school and getting my license. I've had the opportunity to bring my friends, family, and clients into my salon to practice, getting lots of tips and feedback from the other stylists... and I will be starting on the floor within the next few weeks, which is huge. I still would love to practice and give you great deals, so please drop me a line if you're interested in coming in to see me!

I think that's all for now... but there's adventure ahead!

Blonde Inspiration: Jennifer Morrison

She's elegant, talented, and smart. She's got those long, blonde locks that so many women crave. And she's Emma Swan on "Once Upon a Time."

I love Jennifer Morrison.

To add to her fabulousness, Jen wears stunning braided styles to many of her press events. (They need their own post in the near future.)

The trick to maintaining your own blonde hair is keeping it as healthy as possible with hydrating balm treatmentsleave in conditioners, and frequent trims at the salon. Also, a good stylist (call me!), who won't over-process your hair, and will recommend anti-brassiness shampoos and conditioners (you're welcome) is a must. Feel free to shoot me an email if you'd like to swing by the salon for a touch up, or to go blonde for the first time. It's an adventure!

Faire Hair

Here's some styles I did on my sisters for the annual medieval faire my aunt and uncle put on last October. I love any chance to do complex, period hair designs, so I let my sisters choose elements they liked from my Pinterest boards, and spent 3+ hours getting them ready.

These two are twins, and while they had some different ideas when it came to styling their hair, they both chose designs inspired by the renaissance period.

While this was the simplest of the styles, it was also my favorite, due to my sister's thick, long, and naturally highlighted hair.

This sis wins the "most abundant tresses award," and had plenty of hair to leave down after I piled her natural curls sky high, and accented them with roses.

If anyone ever needs some medieval/renaissance styling, give me a call. I'm looking forward to this year's event already...
